Balsa & More

Toys & Models imports Balsa wood from South America and manufacture from it, basic  materials in form of sheets, strips and all kind of other shapes. The Balsa is used to build models by aero modelers, used by architects and model builders to create small structures, models, prototypes and more. The balsa is also used in kindergarten and other hand crafts courses.

In the following photos we will show how row Balsa blocks are transformed into useful material for modelers, architects, models builders and lots more.

The Balsa wood is used for building aero models for about 80 years. The Balsa is imported mainly from South America. The wood is cut at the source country and is dried there. To Israel we import the balsa in a block form. Due to the fact that the wood is cut at an early age there are large differences between one block to the other.

After initial selection, the Balsa is cut into sheets. It is very important how the blocks are cut. Improper cutting of the wood will cause distortion and bending. If the wood is distorted it will become unusable for modelers...

The raw material is cut by the saw to a fixed thickness. After the cutting phase the sheets are going through the sanding phase. This process takes place at a special sanding (trimming) machine that has been specially adapted for Balsa trimming. After sanding and cleaning, the sheets are marked and placed on the shelves ready for use or shipping.

The raw material is normally trimmed to a standard width. It is later processed and cut into sheets in standard thicknesses. The sheets are used in our production line and also are sold to customers. From the same sheets of balsa we make also a verity of strips and other shaped parts.
